As well as accessing documents via the SharePoint website it is also possible to access SharePoint documents natively in Windows using the traditional Explorer window view.

When browsing document libraries inside the SharePoint site on the toolbar there is an ‘Open with Explorer’ button.  This will display the contents of the current library in a familiar window.

Note: This button will not be able to be selected if the browser in use is a browser other than Internet Explorer.

The document access view can go from this:

Documents can be accessed using the familiar windows view while still being able to take advantage of the regular SharePoint features such as document-check-out and versioning.

All documents accessed via this method remain in the cloud.

It is also possible to drag a shortcut to any of the folders within the library or any direct link to the libraries to the ‘Favourites’ menu in Windows 7 and Windows 8.

The shortcut to the HR documents folder inside the ‘Shared Documents’ library is now accessible from the Windows 7/Windows 8 ‘Favourites’ menu which means easy access to this folder both within Windows and software like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
