Adventure Development Ltd is a counselling and skill development intervention for youth who are experiencing difficulties with alcohol and other drugs, mental health, and/or offending. The company has successfully assisted hundreds of young people and their families across the lower South Island, for almost two decades.
Adventure Development has offices in Invercargill, Dunedin, Timaru, as well as staff working from home-based offices in Central Otago.
General Manager Clive McArthur says the key to the company’s success is employing high quality staff. “Having a skilled team with values that match ours is the best starting point – anything else is just the icing on the cake.”
Adventure Development started small, housed within what became the Ministry of Education. “As the organisation grew, we built the infrastructure around it,” he says. “Technology is one of the ways we have done that.
“Because we are located across the lower South Island, we needed to find more effective ways of collaborating. We needed a better system to take care of everything from document management to electronically collating all client data, so it could be analysed.
“With the help of IT company Focus, we moved to a cloud-based solutions environment. It’s been fabulous, as mobility was a huge issue. Our staff carry out home visits, so are regularly travelling out to remote areas. It also means that in their downtime between appointments they can conveniently catch up on their work."
“One of the other advantages of being cloud-based is we don’t have to invest in hardware, so price wise, we are getting a lot more value for what we invest.”
Mr McArthur says they chose to work with Focus after carefully assessing which company was best suited to their needs. “Focus is a local company, so we had access to everyone from their CEO, to the technicians.
“Right from the outset, they worked very hard to understand our business. The team understood the pain points we were experiencing and had the knowledge and infrastructure to solve them.”
Focus offers a comprehensive range of options, he says. “We could see that cloud- based was definitely the way to go. When we were looking at different businesses to go with, we found many companies that were not looking ahead. Unlike Focus, they hadn’t yet got to where the market is heading.”
The company’s collaborative approach was also a strong point. “They’ve been very careful to listen to us, and often anticipate what it is we need. We needed an organisation that we could trust, as we’ve had the experience of not having our expectations met in the past. Focus has proved themselves to be fair, honest, and very upfront.
“They have very smart, clever people on their team – they are always thinking, and we like that. They work really hard on customer service, making sure there is always an engineer and account manager to look after us. It’s that personal service that makes all the difference.”
